Making Cents out of Teens

Image result for cool teensCompanies all want to boost their sales and to achieve this, they try to appeal to the largest audience they can get and for them nowadays, it's teens. In the modern world, teens have more buying power than they did back then, and that is because parents just give money to them so they will stay happy and stay at home. These companies spend millions of dollars to try and find what is "cool" and "trendy" among teens in modern society. They pay culture spies to hunt for what is "cool" so companies can incorporate these "cool" things into their ads. Companies also conduct polls where they interview groups of teens to find out what is currently hot. However, once teens realize that the "cool" things they like are in ads, their quickly lose interests and move onto something else that they think is cool. With this constant process of teens changing their minds on what is "cool" and what is not, it is nearly impossible for companies to keep up with teens and appeal to them.

I, personally, don't think that companies will ever be able to crack the code and be current with what teens like. I think that these big companies will never be able to crack the code because teens today have fast changing minds that find one thing cool, but once companies put them in their ads, teens quickly find something else cool. Teens hate when something they think is cool gets in the hands of adults and they start using their trends. The whole point of a teen is to try and find something cool that adults or companies don't understand. Teens don't like the idea that companies and adults are getting into their business, but the companies' businesses rely on teens buying their products. All the companies want is to make money.

I don't think that I have ever seen an ad and related to it. I just don't think that companies really get teens. They want to be on the same level as us and be relatable, but I just don't think that it will ever happen.

  1. I liked how you talked about how teenagers have more money now because parents are busier in the modern world and try to compensate time for money. I also liked how you talked about how companies will never truly be able to crack the code of cool because they don't understand how to do it authentically because I agree with that. It's like white parents dabbing, as soon as you see that you realize you have to find a new thing. Overall, good blog and I thought you had a number of great insights on this topic
